Pronunciation Guide

Posted by mclearskin on January 17, 2009

The Wolof pronunciation system is relatively simple. Every symbol stands for only one sound. Every symbol is pronounced the same way in every word.

Wolof vowels are either long or short. Long vowels are always doubled, while short vowels are not. Long vowels must be pronounced a little bit longer than a short vowel. Long and short vowels can occur anywhere in the word. The distinction between long and short vowels is very important, because it is sometimes the only way to distinguish pairs of words which have different meanings.

There is a lot of prenalization in Wolof, occurring usually with nasals such as m, n, etc.

A Miracle

Posted by mclearskin on November 24, 2008

Millions of pilgrims go to Lourdes, a world famous city located in France, praying and hoping for wonderful miracles. Jacques did not need to go that far away. A miracle happened on his balcony, back in the nineties.

Click on the following link: African Football, and you’ll read the French story of a miracle. If you – just like me – don’t believe in miracles, you’ll be amazingly surprised. Such things can happen. Sometimes. To some people. Till now, the only miracle I could experience in my life is to collect millions of problems. Hopefully your experience is much better than mine.

See you.

Flying Business Class with Air Internet

Posted by mclearskin on November 22, 2008

In the near future, I’ll proudly present to you some of the most important persons of our world : The Yellow Pages People of Senegal. Mbour will be our first stop. There are a lot of small businesses in Mbour.

Posted by mclearskin on September 3, 2008

Five years ago, I started entering each and every Wolof word and phrase which I came across onto all my high-tech appliances (cell phones, MP3 players, iPod video, even my Chinese electronic dictionary Besta contains Wolof stuff). Having them always handy was perfect to learn some vocab while standing in never ending queue lines or sitting on trains. But I became sick and tired of having only parts of vocab here and there, all scattered all over my high-tech world. Not to mention the files located on my PC.

A few months ago, I started to do what millions of people on the planet do : wasting their precious time blogging. So it didn’t take long to set up a new blog exclusively dedicated to the Wolof language, Senegal and Africa : Le Petit Wolof. At first, I meant to do it only for my own use. Then, I decided to share it with you.

On the other hand, due to the extreme difficulties for Senegal citizens to get a tourist visa to tour Europe or the USA etc. Air Internet is the carrier of choice for taking them to many beautiful places at no cost.

Since August 18, 2008 (birthdate), Le Petit Wolof has already visited:
